Poster and Trailer
Trailer
The trailer that I chose is Avengers: Age of Ultron. It's layout is very bleak and depressing using both a mix of fiery almost war-torn backgrounds and grey, dull backgrounds to symbolise the war and conflict that is coming. The first shots do not give much away and just give little teasers about what is to come. Each shot of the character either is a wide shot or a close up of different parts of their body that the audience can easily associate with that character. Later in the trailer we get little bits of them in action. Due to the fact that it is a sequel film, mainstream audiences will have seen a previous film where they were introduced to these characters and so seeing them again will allow anticipation for the audience. The trailer also introduces three new characters who were not in the first film. Fans who are familiar with the source material will know who they are and so seeing small bits of them will build excitement. It also shows their abilities and hints at what their roles will be.
The trailer does many cuts teasing many different parts of the film. At the start of it, it does multiple cuts to black, first really quick tense ones and then slow faded ones. This provides tension in the trailer and leaves the audience to realise that the main characters will be facing a very large threat. A lot of the trailer is shown in slow-motion which is also a sign of tension. However towards the end of the trailer when revealed that Iron Man and Hulk and will fight, it is very fast paced portraying a high level of conflict. The trailer also shows a number of new background settings, some shown through an establishing shot and others through a wide shot that are just hinted at based on the fact they are places not seen in the first film. Overall, the trailer does not contain much writing. However, the Marvel logo is shown to put their stamp of branding on it and due to the fact that they are a well known, highly established and well loved company, it can give people a stamp of approval as they are likely to have seen at least one of their previous films. The only other piece of writing is the month of release giving information about when people can watch this film. The trailer ends with the Avengers logo in a different colour than what has been seen before. The fact that the logo is red symbolises violence and blood, raising the stakes from the previous film.
Sound, arguably, adds the most tension to the film. There is very limited dialogue from the main heroes of the film with only two characters saying one sentence each. Instead the villain narrates the first half of the trailer explaining his thoughts and views on the world. The audience will immediately recognise that he is the villain from his cold and metallic voice and the fact that his perfect world is accompanied with explosions, war and people in distress. After he talks, a chilling version of "No Strings on Me" is played in the background. The fact that this is usually a fun and happy Disney song that has been turned into a cold and heartless theme can give the audience chills and make them want to see how villainous he will truly be. What is more chilling is when he slowly sings along at the end. It is possible that fans can decipher the parallels between Ultron and the words of the song because like Pinocchio he also broke free of his masters. This type of intertextuality can make the viewer feel fear as there is a chance that they remember the original song from their childhood.

Poster
The film poster I chose was a film called "Get Hard". The background colours are quite simple yet feel gritty. The white background and banner behind the the text are classic attributes of the comedy genre.
The lead stars both appear on the trailer as a way of luring in audiences to watch the film. This is also accompanied by their names at the top confirming that Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell will be the main stars of the film. They have both become huge names in the comedy genre and so have the ability to gain lots of fan appeal. It is evident that it is a comedy based on the looks on the actors faces. They are doing comedic faces that are almost playing with the idea of looking tough. In the image, Kevin Hart is putting Will Ferrell's hair into cornrows. This plays with racial stereotypes and having a background knowledge of the type of characters that both actors usually play. It also will be appealing to its target audience. The clothes that they are both wearing also hints at their characters and how different they are- Kevin Hart in the urban outfits suggesting that he is from the streets and Will Ferrell in a suit suggesting that he is a middle class working man. However because Hart is above Ferrell it suggests that he is in charge. The poster contains the tagline- "an education in incarceration". This line is memorable and gives a general idea of the film's narrative. The final thing it contains is the age rating to inform the audience who it is for and who it isn't
