  • Modern Industry- the types of games that are commonly played and enjoyed by this generation. Video Game developers will looks for this when deciding what kind of game would sell best.
  • Large Profit- When the games sells well and allows the developers to earn a lot more than what they spent to make the game. A huge example of this is Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA V). At the time it was the most expensive game ever made costing $265million (£170million). However they made all of that money back. Due to high sales, they have earned over $1billion.
  • Audience changes- Over time the audience grows and starts to expect more from the franchise. They may grow tired of the same, repeated formula so as a result of this game developers add more things to expand upon the games. For example the Mario games, started off on a 2-D platform but recently in games such as Super Mario Odyssey the games have jumped into 3-D with a number of additional features, an open world and side missions.
  • Technological features- The updated features in a game that evolve over time due to new technology eg. better graphics
  • Narrative and structures- the storyline in which a player has to go through to complete the game. This can include the main story and different side-missions that are accessible.
  • Marketing and distribution- Video games are marketed in many ways. These can include trailers, free copies being sold to critics and famous gamers. There are multiple video game conventions that fans can attend to try out the games. Also, there are sites such IGN that promote videos games for fans.

Media Theories:

Bandura's theory states that video games cause regressive behaviour among children. For example games such as Grand Theft Auto contain murder, going to strip clubs and hiring prostitutes. His theory indicates that because children have such small minds and can be influenced so easily, they may think of these things as correct and start trying to recreate what they see.
