1000 word analysis on film trailer

The first thing that the group needed to decide was the film's genre. It eventually came down to two genres: horror and comedy. We chose comedy as we thought there is more we could do with it on a budget of £0.00 without it looking extremely amateurish. After that we needed to create a plot for the film with settings that are easily accessible to us- hence the school setting. What we decided on was to have the members of our group act as 3 undercover police officers who go undercover into a school in order to find the culprit of a number of murders in the area. The main influence on the film was 21 and 22 Jump Street as they were very successful films telling the same sort of story that we were doing. Another influence on the film was Get Hard due to its humorous name that can sound extremely wrong without context. As we are trying to find and apprehend a serial killer the title is 'Busting a nut-job'.

We had to each choose the stereotypical types of characters that would commonly be seen in a film of this particular genre. We chose a sarcastic and funny character, an intentionally unlikeable character and a dumb group victim character. As well as that we thought of actors who would fit these roles, as well as actors who could be seen in a comedy film, settling on Elijah Wood, Miles Teller and Kevin Hart respectively. Because the characters were going undercover in a college, we had to create two different sets of names: their real ones and the names that they chose when going undercover. To add the comedy theme, the characters real names were just generic everyday names that could blend into society. However, the undercover names that they each chose were comedic whilst being well suited to their personalities. The funny characters real name was Brandon Smith but he chooses the name Johnny Knoxville, who was the old presenter of the television prank show 'Jackass'. The unlikeable character's name was James Wilson with the identity of Brad Litt, an obvious mockery of Brad Pitt's name. The dumb characters name was Alex Davis but he accidentally gave himself the identity of Benjamin Dover, an intentionally stupid name that can be shortened to Ben Dover (bend over). This goes with his character's personality in which he is a non-intelligent person who gets mocked by his peers because of his lack of common sense.

The next thing needed was a script. As we were only making a trailer, we just created a few jokes intended to make an audience laugh whilst giving an insight into what the film and the characters will be like. The jokes had to be short in order to fit them into the trailer with enough context for it to make sense. Overall, we wrote 5 jokes, however only 4 made it into the final cut. Those were the joke regarding the name of Ben Dover, the joke about the catch me outside girl, the mum phone call joke and the Transformers joke. The joke we had to cut was the joke where James runs away from the girl. The problem with this was that we couldn't find a willing extra to play the role.

The point of the jokes was for audience appeal. Our target audience will be expecting laugh-out-loud, slapstick humour. Also, the fact that famous Hollywood actors are said to be in it can bring in more people who are fans of their existing works. This ensures that there will be a promise of pleasure for the audience. The studio that we used was Universal, which has distributed for some comedy films in the past such as Ted and also Night School which also stars Kevin Hart.  The Universal logo is  the first thing that is seen within the trailer. After the studio logo we wasted no time going into the film showing an opening scene where a couple of the characters are introduced to the audience. This gives context to the narrative as well as provides laughs and an insight into the kind of jokes that the film has in it. We also used number of pop-culture references in the trailer to cater towards our target audience. These include one about the Catch Me Outside girl who was hugely popular in 2017 and one about the Transformers franchise. The only other joke in the trailer is when one of the characters reference the title of the film.

The last thing we needed to do was the poster. We researched comedy posters to get a general idea of what they looked like. For the background we used green as it is a light and non-intense colour. The poster also had to include the names of the actors that we were portraying. To make each character stand out we put each of their names in different colours. The title of our film was in bold at the top centre followed by the tagline underneath. The poster consisted of the 3 members of the group doing comedic poses parodying the film 'Charlie's Angels' but with our own characters spin on it. Finally at the bottom of the poster there is a list of credits both of real and fake names.

After the trailer we added a small little blooper reel showing us making the film's trailer and the times where we slipped up. I think this works well with the genre of the film as it is a comedy so it is obviously intended to make people laugh. Also, it means that the videos that we didn't do write or did not want to put into the final cut were not wasted. Also the fact that we had fun when making the film can further be shown through the use of bloopers.
