Straight Outta Compton Trailer

Straight Outta Compton Trailer

Straight Outta Compton was a biographical film based on the life of American rap/hip-hop group
N.W.A. It was produced by Dr Dre and Ice Cube, actual members of the group. The film was made by Legendary and distributed by Universal. It is a mainstream film made for fans of the genre, young black males and people who were alive when the N.W.A were on the rise and people who are interested in the cultural significance of the N.W.A in rap . The film was released in August 2015 with the global trailer being released 4 months prior in April 2015.

The trailer highlights the L.A setting with its bright blue skies and palm trees. The rich-looking exterior settings immediately contrasts the poor looking interior settings of the characters households. The first few seconds of the trailer uses numerous fades to introduce each of the characters, their families and the settings. It portrays the different backgrounds of the 3 main characters and gives a look into their struggles e.g Ice Cube getting into trouble with the police. To an extent, the trailer goes chronologically, first showing the 3 characters separated then joining together to record and make music and the backlash that they received as a result of it.

The trailer also shows what kind of genre it will be. Throughout the trailer, the N.W.A's songs play in the background both as instrumentals and the actors rapping it themselves. In most trailers the actors who star in the film will be highlighted, however instead the figures that they are playing are shown in bold. This shows that the audience is meant to care and want to see the depictions of the characters than the actors themselves.

There was a viral campaign released that allowed people to create their own "Straight outta" merchandise. This was received well by fans and allowed the film to make money. Overall, when the film was released, Straight Outta Compton grossed $161.2 million at the box office in the United States and Canada and $40.4 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $201.6 million.
